Editorial: You should adopt, not shop for your pets

The term “pandemic pet” may sound familiar to many people who have recently brought an animal into their home. Since 2021, as people start returning to work in person, animal shelters and rescues have seen a significant increase in “pandemic pets” being surrendered. Many of these animals include pets bought from breeders or pet stores.

Opinion: Title IX should be recognized for more than sports

Upon mentioning Title IX, most people associate the legislation with how it changed the landscape of women’s collegiate sports. As a matter of fact, this year, the United States celebrated National Women and Girls in Sports Day during the 50th anniversary of Title IX’s passing. However, its efforts go far beyond combating sex-based discrimination in sports.

Underrepresentation of women in sports journalism

Many critics argue that analysts should be athletes who’ve played professionally. Based on this rationale, former female athletes should be broadcasting for fellow women’s sports. But this is not the case; coverage for female sports leagues, like the WNBA, is still dominated by men. Despite 37.6% of the professional athletes in the United States being women, only 22.2% of sports journalists in the United States identify as female.

Editorial: We need to stop wasting so much produce

Every year, 60 million tons of produce in the United States is thrown away. That’s $160 billion worth of fresh fruits and vegetables that end up in landfills, wasted. Many grocery stores demand “blemish-free” produce, which means farmers throw away “ugly” food before it even gets to a store.

Lifestyle changes may sustain the future

In the early 20th century, America transitioned into a consumer society, emitting massive amounts of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere, marine debris, deforestation, among other exploitation of natural resources, and destruction of habitats have exponentially increased. Mass production of factory-made and non-eco-friendly products has made significant contributions to increasingly transparent issues like climate change.

Scots grab a dominant win over the Matadors

Carlmont boys varsity basketball won in an exciting fashion over the Monta Vista Matadors on Friday, Dec. 17. The Scots were exceptionally proud of this win and were in good spirits after the game. Midway through the first quarter, Enzo Carvalho-Goncalves, a junior guard had already hit a couple of 3-pointers to add to an early 17-2 lead that instilled some confidence in the Scots.

Opinion: You should know the real history of Thanksgiving

For many, Thanksgiving is a holiday full of giving thanks, spending time with family, and devouring piles of food. However, for Indigenous communities, it’s a different story. On Thanksgiving Day, instead of celebrating, they mourn the deaths of their ancestors that were brought upon by European immigrants.

Knights defeat the Scots in homecoming game

On homecoming night, Carlmont varsity football fell to the Menlo Knights with a score of 55-17. However, the crowd was roaring, and even the opponents felt the Screamin’ Scots. The Knights let their presence be known in their opening drive. A touchdown pass from Beltran gave Menlo an early 7-point lead, his unsurpassed performance a cause for celebration on the Menlo sideline.

NBA play-in tournament has mixed reactions

The NBA has opted to have a short tournament at the end of the regular season to determine the final four teams in the 2021 playoffs. The NBA’s board of governors elected to call it a play-in tournament, and it will be a unique event. Usually, the first through eighth seeded teams will automatically get a spot in the playoffs. This year, only the first through sixth will be guaranteed a playoff position.

Scots dominate the Vikings

In their last home game of the season, Carlmont’s JV football team defeated Mills. While this was the first game of the Vikings’ season, the opponent’s lack of season playing experience did not guarantee a win for the Scots. Though the first quarter was unproductive for both teams, the Scots were able to close the quarter as the first team to put points on the board.

Feminism takes the field

Over the years, women have struggled to find a voice, especially in the world of sports. However, recently many women are being recognized for their professional sports-related achievements and are inspiring countless young women. Bias towards men has caused setbacks for women to reach their full potential. Female athletes, specifically, have had difficulty proving their physical abilities to their male counterparts.

Selfishness on the rise

Power and success always go hand in hand. To achieve success, we often hear about working hard and being kind. However, the most influential people do not get there by ordinary means. Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, is the richest man in the world. And his company Amazon seems to have no issues with using unethical means to further itself. Exploitation, child labor, and manipulation are just three common methods of getting ahead in society. And Amazon is no different.

Rule 600 limits student athletes

 Vol 14 Issue 4: Math N' Cheese

To celebrate our "Education Issue," Karla and I wanted to talk to our favorite math teachers about their favorite savory recipes. Both teachers ended up giving us delicious mac n' cheese recipes that were a blast to make.

Vol 14 Issue 2: The reality of E-Waste

The effects of our world’s growing reliance on technology go far beyond the production of devices. As more electronics are being manufactured, more electronic waste (e-waste) comes as a result. E-waste is supposedly recycled at centers where they are taken apart and reused to make new electronics. However, Aran O’Sullivan, a senior at Carlmont and Co-President of Green Team, says otherwise.

 Vol 13 Issue 6: May-AAPI Movie Recommendations

May 1 marks the beginning of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. In recent years, the AAPI community has struggled to gain representation in the media. AAPI-produced movies often don’t get as much exposure or attention, so here are some film recommendations directed by and starring members of the AAPI community.
